Aaron's Top 4: Pokemon Elite Four
It must suck to be an elite four member. You’re in a group of the best trainers in the region and yet you get no screen time at all. Unlike the gym leaders who sometimes show up before you enter the gym and have a large building with other trainers to help develop them, the elite just get one room and three lines of dialogue before and after the fight. They have to make a very quick impression through the aesthetic of their room and appearance. Everything else has to be told to you through their battle.
It’s incredibly difficult to become a well-received elite four member, so here are the ones that left a lasting impression despite their four lines of dialogue.
4:
Drasna, Kalos
Altaria, Noivern Dragagle, Druddigon
Pokémon loves to put dragons up on a pedestal. In doing so, every dragon user is this sort of ‘I’m tough’ character. What I like about Drasna is that she’s a grandma who makes sure you eat something before you get to school. Like…wow! How rare is this? The strongest of the elite four but is just cheery 100% of the time.
She’s not even mad or sad that she loses. She’s just happy to know the kid is having fun. Plus it’s not that bubbly bouncing off the walls happy. It’s reserved and welcoming. She reminds me of Delia Ketchum from the anime in that sense. Wait…whose Ash’s grandma again?
3:
Phoebe, Hoenn
Banette, Mismagius, Drifblim, Chandelure, Dusknoir, Sableye
I love ghost type Pokémon. And the Ruby/Sapphire remake shot this character’s room up to my favorite Elite Four Room. There’s this eerie atmosphere and it’s so well done making it seem like an actual haunted house. Then you enter and there’s a hula girl waiting to give a decent battle!
Not hard but certainly harder than the entire Kalos elite four. Sorry, Drasna.
2:
Marshal, Unova
Conkeldurr, Throh, Sawk, Mienshao
They turned an ufc fighter into a Pokémon trainer.
…Oh you want more?
Okay. He’s the most difficult of the Unova to defeat since his Pokémon have moves that troll flying types and have a huge attack that completely destroys the wimpy defense of gen 5’s psychics. If you don’t have a strategy beyond type advantage, you’re going to tap out.
1:
Karen, Johto
Umbreon, Vileplume, Houndoom, Murkrow, Gengar
Her Pokémon are great. A Murkrow to get rid of the fighting type advantage. Umbreon, which is a speedy tank. Houndoom as the ultimate powerhouse. And Vileplum and Gengar because reasons. Actually, there is a reason.
“Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with the Pokémon they love best. I like your style. You understand what’s important. Go on — — the Champion is waiting.“
That right there is why I love Pokémon. I know it seems shallow to put a person as my number one because of a single line, which I’m not. Her battle was great. Not as great as Marshal’s but still fun. Elite Four members only have one or two lines to leave a lasting impression and that’s exactly what Karen did to a tee.
