Gym leaders, the trainers in charge of seeing if the player is worthy of moving on the region’s league. They range from goofy (Wake) to intimidating (Chuck), to flushed out and engaging (Elesa) to ‘I hate you’ (Grant). In any other game, their called ‘Boss battles’. Here, they’re called Gym battles. Either way, I’m listing the ones that I consider to be absolute bosses. 5: Korrina, Kalos A gym leader that you face before and after the gym battle. Hey! That’s pretty cool! Like most of the Kalos gym leaders, she isn’t that hard to beat. Korrina’s Meinfoo was able to land a few hits but I’m putting her on for her place in the story.  Gen 6 introduced mega stones which is basically a power boost and Korrina did a great job easing the gamer into the concept. Being a gym leader, it makes sense that she’d be trusted with that power. Plus she’s related to the ‘master of mega evolution’. Romance is one of those things that’s optional despite the idea being pounded into your head. Some days, I just wanna watch an action movie without a forced love interest sub plot. Or maybe a romantic comedy with a love triangle where the person decides, ‘you’re both awful. I’m going to enjoy being by myself.’ But until then…here are the ones that got it right in my eyes. Pokémon evil teams. They range from the mafia to eco terrorist to teenagers who couldn’t even steal a bus stop. But no matter the generation, one thing that can be said about the teams, is that they’re entertaining through their simplicity. For the most part. While the teams do have an easy to follow motive and plan (exceptions vary), there’s a lot more depth to these sprites than you may think. Just because the character has 10 facial expressions, doesn’t mean there was only 10 minutes spent writing them. Evil doesn’t have to be complicated. Pokemon is my favorite franchise. I grew up with the anime and playing the games upon release. One thing I always looked forward to in the main stream games were the champions. The person you face after defeating the eight gym leaders/bosses and removing the threat of a gang/terrorists group. I’m here to list my favorite kings of the hill and conquering queens. Its like, ‘surprise! Here’s the real final boss!’ They did something similar with Blue, but the build-up was more ambiguous. It’s like a noire film where everyone talks about the great incident 3 years ago involving Team Rocket and how they were broken up.  You get hints that Red, the person behind the overthrow of team rocket, is missing once you enter Kanto. It must suck to be an elite four member. You’re in a group of the best trainers in the region and yet you get no screen time at all. Unlike the gym leaders who sometimes show up before you enter the gym and have a large building with other trainers to help develop them, the elite just get one room and three lines of dialogue before and after the fight. They have to make a very quick impression through the aesthetic of their room and appearance. Everything else has to be told to you through their battle.  It’s incredibly difficult to become a well-received elite four member, so here are the ones that left a lasting impression despite their four lines of dialogue. 4: Drasna, Kalos Altaria, Noivern Dragagle, Druddigon  Pokémon loves to put dragons up on a pedestal. In doing so, every dragon user is this sort of ‘I’m tough’ character. What I like about Drasna is that she’s a grandma who makes sure you eat something before you get to school. Like…wow!
