Aaron's Review: FLCL

FLCL was about a kid who thinks he’s being mature by not interacting with others or just being distant but in reality is masking the pain of not having his brother around due to him leaving to become a baseball player. The events that take place in the show is Naota’s call to come of age and stop being scared of breaking out of the box he’s living in.
Everything I just said was never blatantly said in the show. It’s shown visually through the characters facial expressions that can swing from strong to subtle which is a mark of top notch animation and artwork. Every frame is meant to add something. Either it’s to the story or character development. Even the South Park references. Those are just simple jokes that tell the audience a bit more about how serious a character takes something since the switch in animation for the joke is to a less detailed style.
There’s so much to decipher in just one scene because it’s just that imaginative and thought out. Granted, the reason most people dislike the show is because that could easily be interpreted as clunky and zany for the purpose of being zany.
Hell, first time viewing I would’ve given it a C+ cause I was scratching my head at Haruko’s actions. Thankfully that’s one reason the series is only 6 episodes. You can rewatch it over and over and not waste a lot of time even if you dislike it.
The other reason people dislike it is the obvious innuendos. And by obvious I mean Haruko might as well have just said ‘fuck, dick, hard on’ during her conversation with 'Director Eyebrows'. But it was spaced out enough so it didn’t bother me too much.
!Grade!
In a medium that just says EVERYTHING and doesn’t let the visuals help with the story, it’s nice to have a show about an alien helping a 6th grader finally get his balls off of lay-away
