Aaron's Top 10: Couples
Romance is one of those things that’s optional despite the idea being pounded into your head. Some days, I just wanna watch an action movie without a forced love interest sub plot. Or maybe a romantic comedy with a love triangle where the person decides, ‘you’re both awful. I’m going to enjoy being by myself.’ But until then…here are the ones that got it right in my eyes.
Enjoy!
Guys, Gals, & Non Binary Pals. This is Animated Aaron’s Top 10 Couples.
Honorable Mentions:
Lilian x Roomie: Go Get A Roomie
Largo x Erika: Megatokyo
Roy x Riza: Fullmetal Alchemist Franchise
Homer x Marge: The Simpsons
Rapunzel x Flynn: Tangled
Korra x Mako: Avatar-The Legend of Korra
Suki x Sokka: Avatar-The Last Airbender
10: Shinji & Kaworu-NGE Franchise
Shinji is a very shy person who has a lot of issues. He’s scared of interacting with people and can be emotional but almost always backs away when someone tries to get close. Enter Kaworu who is forward with his attraction but isn’t forceful. He leaves clues to Shinji allowing the teen to make his own opinion on how to react. While not immediately romantic, Shinji does open up to him.
Little by little, we see a kid who is scared to be around others now playing piano with this romantic boy with white hair. Kaworu did something I think all couples should do. He helped the person he loved improve.
9: Cameron & Mitchel: Modern Family
Cameron & Mitchel are probably one of the funniest couples I’ve ever seen on TV. The two actors portray their characters so lively and with so much fun that just their line reads bring a smile to my face.
Cameron is so optimistic and nice and wants to prove himself to people. But he’s sort of scared of confrontations and ends up doing something wrong and having to think on the fly which he’s not good at. Mitchel wants to prove others wrong and has a sort of ‘calm’ ego. He’s charming but obnoxious at times and it’s never annoying for me.
Now, put those two personalities together and you have comedic gold. Their competitive. They talk smack to each other. They’re supportive of the other but let them know how they feel about the other’s idea (sometimes reluctantly) but still help in their own way. They’re one of the most honest couples I’ve seen.
8: Kirito x Asuna: Sword Art Online
Okay, so the anime has some mixed reviews that I even talked about in my review. Let’s just say straight up that the second half of SOA is not a factor in my analysis for this list. That being said, I want relationship goals like this!
“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up.”
― Neil Gaiman
― Neil Gaiman
These two, once engaged in a romantic relationship, were always together. They bought a cottage together, they fought together (and against each other at the start), and they’re willing to die for one another. Which given the world they’re in where people are literally stabbing eachother in the back, takes a lot of trust for anyone to do.
Once inside one another (emotionally and sexually), they didn’t take advantage or mess with each other like rivals normally would. While rivals and coworkers, they loved one another like nothing else mattered.
To sum up their relationship: Trust personified.
7: Steven x Connie: Seven Universe
They’re lower on the list because, part of the reason I was considering not putting Steven & Connie here was…well, I was trying to figure out if they were a couple or not. Steven is this half human, half (space rock) alien who’s learning about his powers with a cheery attitude. He meets this girl Connie in season 1 who’s shy and keeps to herself. While they engage in awkward conversation time to time, by season 4, they’re fighting aliens together in perfect sync and sharing secrets.
I mean, it’s obvious they like each other. But is it a relationship or the ‘will they, won’t they’ trope. There’s interviews with the show’s creator that I looked up to try and find the answer but in the end, the answer didn’t come from her.
There’s this writing utensil that states: “If two characters need to kiss in order to tell the audience they’re in love, then you’re not writing romance correctly.” And that’s pretty much how this relationship works.
I didn’t need to see a 12 & 14 year old make out (not that I want to see that either). I see how angry Steven gets when this character Kevin was being beyond rude to them. The fact that it bothers Connie bothers Steven. I see how the two are willing to step out of their comfort zones for the other. Steven’s the first person Connie calls when there’s an emergency. Steven asks himself what his life is gonna be like as an adult and states, “What am I gonna be when Connie is president? ‘First boy’?”
That’s…that’s just cute. These two are just…cute.
6: Ed x Winry: Fullmetal Alchemist Franchise
What can I say that hasn’t been said already? One of the most popular ships in anime, ‘Edwin’ is just the best Tsundre relationship I’ve ever seen.
Ed is the headstrong dork who will stop at nothing once he sets his mind to it. Winry is the intelligent nerd who will never back down when confronted with a challenge.
That pretty much sums up their relationship. They’re so similar in desires, tactics, and mannerisms that it’s cute to see them clash and interact. While Winry will never blow something up like Ed would, she still has a mean streak like him. Ed might not be able to build machines like Winry but his intelligence is never under question by his peers.
Ed & Winry don’t need to sweet talk the other to show love. It just comes naturally with their day to day interactions. It’s simple, but very powerful.
They may argue, but never doubt the other.
5: Phil & Vivian: Fresh Prince of Bel Air
I think what I loved about Phil & Vivian was how much the two answered one another’s questions. Phil would ask, ‘why did we ever have kids?’ Where Vivian would respond, ‘Because of the way you get them.’ Vivian would ask, ‘what’re we going to do about Hilary (their daughter who wouldn’t move out)?’ Phil would think of an ultimatum for their daughter that Vivian approved of.
Sometimes Phil would butt heads with his nephew Will, and Vivian would have to interfere. Other times Vivian would bite more than she could chew and Phil would have her back or reason her through it. The two meet so many problems in their marriage. Some internal, some from the rest of the world. But either way, the two always came up with something in the end.
They asked each other questions, and they solved each other’s problems.
4: George x Angie: The George Lopez Show
To me, George & Angie are a more polished version of ‘Homer & Marge’. A bit on the far-fetched side, but hear me out.
George wants to do something for himself but Angie wants to help others. Or help George, or have George loosen up, or basically something he has no interest in. While giving his wife the thumbs up, George still tries to do his own thing until Angie talks him out of it. Or into whatever that episode’s plot is. So far, they’re a cutout of ‘The Simpsons’ right? Well, not exactly.
While Homer & Marge are cartoonish (drum snare), these two are much closer to a real life couple. They argue using logic in their debates with a touch of outlandish and/or black comedy. However, the arguments are over paying money for an unnecessary class trip for their kids.
George: “I’m all for paying for books and stuff, but nobody needs to see a space shuttle launch.”
But here’s the kicker, Angie isn’t always in the right. She lies and goes behind her husband’s back too. Not nearly as much as George, but she does it too.
Sounds like a marriage with some problems right? Exactly! It’s an actual marriage! They argue, flirt, insult, reward, prank, and love each other all at the same time. Despite George being from a broken home and Angie being the runner up for prom queen in high school, they stick with one another despite all their differences.
3: Yuri Katsuki & Victor Nikiforov
These two are the definition of ‘extra’. Well, Victor is anyway. Imagine meeting your idol because a video of you mirroring his skating routine goes viral. He comes to your house to be your coach for the next grand prix. How does he introduce himself? By being in your hot spring, bare ass and cock!
So obviously, this is a generic ‘openly gay (in this case bisexual) male tries to seduce closeted gay (in this case bisexual) male by making sexual advances’ story line that is a cancer in media, right? Nope! When Yuri is shown to be uncomfortable with Victor flirting in the way he was, he backs off. Not only that, Victor is still Yuri’s coach. So when he’s giving him pep talks and lectures, its to help Yuri in competition and not to get in his pants. The confidence Yuri starts obtaining through the show, results in him being the one winking at Victor and saying in a flirtatious way, ‘don’t take your eyes off me’.
This was Shinji and Kaworu fully realized as adults. The confident snow haired boy helping his hubby to be all he can be and getting a genuine love in return.
2: Rocky x Adrian: Rocky Balboa franchise
When she was being humiliated by her brother, the fact that he loved her made her strong enough to stand up to her Paule. He gave her a kiss when she thought no one would come close to her. He was the man who made her a better person.
Even though he lost his first title match and they were broke, she stayed with him. She married him when he didn’t have the title. She kept him humble when he was at the top. She stayed with him when they hit the bottom.
They’re the greatest personification of a marriage I’ve seen in movies.
1: Ricky Ricardo & Lucille ‘Lucy’ Ball
“You may not be her first, her last, or her only. She loved before she may love again. But if she loves you now, what else matters? She’s not perfect—you aren’t either, and the two of you may never be perfect together but if she can make you laugh, cause you to think twice, and admit to being human and making mistakes, hold onto her and give her the most you can. She may not be thinking about you every second of the day, but she will give you a part of her that she knows you can break—her heart. So don’t hurt her, don’t change her, don’t analyze and don’t expect more than she can give. Smile when she makes you happy, let her know when she makes you mad, and miss her when she’s not there.”
