Aaron's Review/Rant: Air
…Fuck Moe.
Guys, Gals, & Non Binary Pals. This is Aaron’s Review of Air TV
!Background!
First things first, the name of this show is ‘Air’. But to better track it down, type in ‘Air TV’ or ‘Air Anime’.
Now, the show focuses on a drifter named Yukito who finds himself in a small town by the beach. He’s encountered by a stupid girl and the two become close as he lives in the town trying to get money through his puppet show. During this time, Yukito meets other people in the town and begins to aid them one by one through the series.
!Characters!
I don’t like this show for two reasons. One: I hate the Moe aspect of anime. Moe is basically making a character cute as a part of the show’s entertainment (K-On, Kanon, Haruhi Suzumiya, Lucky Star, ect).
The idea is to use the fact the character is doing something ‘cute’ to entertain, but most anime I’ve seen get it backwards. Instead of having a character do or say ‘cute’ things, it just has a shell doing and saying something that would be thought of as ‘cute’ and basing a character around it. This show follows the trend.
The secondary character Misuzu, while harmless, gets on my nerves because of this. She’s not a character, she’s a goddamn Barbie doll.
Most of the characters are exactly like this as a matter of fact. The only characters who didn’t follow the trend were Haruko (Misuzu’s aunt/foster mother) and Hijiri (the town doctor). The only positive I can give this show was that Haruko was a joy to watch because of her contradicting personality to the other girls.
Yukito’s pessimistic attitude and bored expressions were supposed to act as a reality check or a counter to the happy mood most of the girls in the show have. Which leads to my second problem with the show.
!Story!
I didn’t care about the characters, so I didn’t really care about what happened to them. The show starts with a slice of life tone, but each character Yukito encounters has their own melodramatic moments and episodes. Even though the dramatic scenes were well animated and the tone was done well during the scene, I wasn’t invested when I was supposed to be beforehand. After pandering for so long, I just viewed the tragic backstories as ‘they’re just doing it for the sake having them.’
The other issue is Yukito himself after half way through the series. I’m not going to spoil it, but I felt as though his arc was sort of pointless in the way it happened and it hindered the show because of it.
!The Show!
So, I couldn’t talk about the characters because I didn’t like the way they were presented and I couldn’t talk about the plot because the show failed to get me invested. Even though the animation is beautiful and the art is very colorful, it doesn’t keep me from falling asleep watching this. Oh well.
!Grade!
Air TV: F
Final Word: Animate it was well as you want, the characters and plot are still garbage
