Aaron's Review: Legend of Korra season 1
Guys, Gals & Non Binary Pals. This is Aaron’s Review of The Legend of Korra (season 1).
! Background!
The show is a spinoff/continuation of ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’. Korra, the next avatar after Aang, moves to Republic city to learn air bending. However, there’s a terrorist group called ‘The Equalist’ who want the non-benders to have power and believe benders need to be taken down. So, Korra must deal with a new life as well as a mysterious villain wanting her to be a broken human for simply being the avatar.
! The Story!
My main problem with the story is just how the show adds things in. Granted, the elements being brought in are fine, but as the show gets to episode 10, it’s a little hard keeping track of everything.
It starts with Korra being introduced as a hard headed prodigy who sneaks on a boat from the South Pole to Republic city so that Tenzin, Aang’s son, can teach her airbending. She then gets in trouble by the police for destroying a street after stopping gang members from harming an old man. And then in the next episode she meets Bolin and his brother Mako who are athletes and she joins the team. And then Amon, the leader of the equalist begins to make himself known to Korra and the city. And then we meet Asami. And then we have a love triangle. And then we have a council member trying to get Korra to join a task force.
And then this, then that, then this, then that. Agh! I like what I’m seeing but I don’t need to see some of it. The love triangle is unnecessary and could’ve been swapped out for more development for the villain. He’s a good villain, but I wanted more of Amon is what I’m saying.
! The Characters!
Korra, as stated before, is a prodigy with a temper problem. She’s always looking to improve her skills and the tantrums get less violent as she goes through the story. In episode two, she’s given a challenge so that she can learn air bending techniques and because it wasn’t coming to her as easy as the other elements, she uses fire bending to destroy the obstacle and yells at her teacher. At the end of the episode, she apologizes. Now, I’m expecting to repeat this later. Nope! She gets frustrated, but she takes a breath and talks to Tenzin.
That’s her character to me. A brat learning to me more humble and showing the struggle of it.
Mako & Bolin are two brothers who are pro-benders (cross boxing with sumo wrestling using bending and you have half the idea). Bolin being the younger and more laid back yet irresponsible earth bender and Mako as the older down to earth fire bender with a chip on his shoulder. They’re okay and I don’t really care for either of them. Bolin got some laughs out of me and Mako was cool but nothing about them made me really love them or hate them.
Asami is a non-bending engineer who later helps Korra, Mako, & Bolin in fighting the Equalist. Her character could’ve easily been that sort of ‘princess’ who only helps from the sidelines as ‘the brain’, but no. She gets physical. She talks to Mako about his issues as well as Korra. She prefers to be nice until a line a crossed but is by no means a hot head.
There’re more characters but there’s way too many to get into, so I’ll stop here.
! The Show!
The show takes place about 70 years after the end of the first show but it does a good job distancing itself from ‘The Last Airbender’. It has this roaring 1920’s setting with steampunk aesthetic mixed in and it’s a joy to look at. The art style is very engaging well detailed. Honesty, the show looks like this expensive piece of art and the way it shows how the world of Avatar has evolved is a story in itself. Metal bending police officers. A statue of Aang where The Statue of Liberty would be. The vast colors of the sky and buildings is just a treat that helps tell the story.
!Summary!
The Legend of Korra is an okay show that acts as a good continuation and has entertaining characters, but it tries to have so much in a short amount of time (14 episodes). The ending to the first season is very rushed and easily the worst part of it. So, do I recommend it then? Yeah. The journey is what matters to me.
! Grade!
